Mathematics at English Martyrs enables children to achieve the 3 main National curriculum aims:

  • Children become fluent in the fundamentals of maths (‘Do maths’)
  • Children can solve problems by applying their mathematics (‘Use maths’)
  • Children can reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry (‘Talk maths’)

Our mathematics curriculum is designed to provide a solid foundation in mathematical concepts and skills, fostering a love for mathematics while ensuring all our students reach their full potential. At English Martyrs, our intent is to deliver a comprehensive, engaging, and inclusive mathematics education that equips our students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in their future academic and everyday lives.

We intend to achieve our aims by:

  • Ensuring a high-quality Maths curriculum delivered through quality first teaching and influenced by a Teaching for Mastery approach.
  • Implementing a scheme of Mathematics (White Rose Maths) as the foundation of our curriculum across school across school to ensure consistency and coverage.
  • Delivering sequences of coherent lessons with small steps of progression within and across lessons support the deeper understanding of key concepts and include the pre-empting and addressing of misconceptions.
  • Providing a variety of mathematical opportunities, including the chance for additional practice to build fluency and automaticity,  which will enable pupils to make the connections needed to enjoy a greater depth in learning.
  • Developing independent learners with inquisitive minds who have secure mathematical foundations and an interest in self-improvement.
  • Enabling children to develop a range of mathematic skills including: making connections between mathematical representations and ideas, fluent recall of mathematical facts, efficient mental and written arithmetic strategies, presenting mathematical justifications and competence in understanding and solving problems.

All Teachers:

  • ‘Know where their children are’ through the use of concise summative assessment, prior learning, assessment, Maths talk.
  • ‘Understand where their children need to be’ through a secure understanding of year group expectations and/or pre key stage expectations and incisive, ongoing, formative assessment.
  • ‘Know how they are going to get them there’ through the use of a range of strategies to promote independence, mastery, and high expectations of ALL.

The children will have:

  • Quick recall of facts and procedures
  • The flexibility and fluidity to move between different contexts and representations of Mathematics
  • The ability to recognise relationships and make connections in Mathematics
  • The ability to show how a mathematical concept or skill has been mastered when a child can show it in multiple ways, using the mathematical language to explain their ideas, and can independently apply the concept to new problems in an unfamiliar environment

This will be assessed through assessment, tracking, pupil progress meetings, performance management, moderation and standardisation.
