Laudato Si' (formerly Eco Council) - English Martyrs Catholic Primary School

Laudato Si’ (formerly Eco Council)

Pope Francis has written a letter addressed to every person on the planet, asking us all to listen to the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor”. Laudato Si’ is an encyclical written by Pope Francis, it was published on the 18 June 2015. Encyclicals are open letters written by the pope.

Laudato Si’ discusses the damage being inflicted on the Earth by humans. He says we need a new definition of progress rooted in “integral ecology”, recognising that “everything is connected” and hearing both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. Pope Francis calls for all people to dialogue in society about how best to tackle the global issues we face.

At English Martyrs we want to make sure that every child’s voice is heard as we plan for their future and develop our school. Our School Council and Laudato Si’ (formerly called Eco Council) are an elected group of children who represent their class, attend meetings, seek opinions and plan events. To find out more about their work, read on …

Congratulations to our Laudato Si’ councillors who were elected democratically through class elections.

What is Laudato Si’?

Laudato Si’ is a group of pupils who meet each month to discuss eco-friendly and environmental issues within school, which prepares children to live their future lives with consideration for global issues.

Why do we have a Laudato Si’?

-To ensure our school is eco-friendly and prepares pupils to live with reflection of the environment.

-To make sure each class has a platform to voice their opinions.

-To discuss and raise issues related to the environment.

Achievements to date include:

Raising awareness of how to save energy in school and the importance of recycling.

Planting vegetables in our planters and harvesting the food.
